Colour Conundrum

I have decided to stitch the Passione Ricamos Arabesque ‘E’ as a gift for christmas. I am stithcing it over one on strawberry milkshake lugana from silkweaver. My problem is the floss colour. I asked Mr B to choose between a selection of threads that I was thinking about and he chose Carribean Eve from Vicki Clayton. Lovely colour fabulous thread but after stitching on it I am not sure it is really working.

Add to the problem the fact that I am planning on mounting this in a dark oak box and the lighter tones of the Caribbean Eve silk seem to clash all the more. So…. I need opinions. Should I continue with the Caribbean Eve or scrap what I have and start again with a different floss? Also which floss colour would you reccommend? I have gotten all paranoid now and don’t want to go back to it until I get a few opinions.
Unfortunately the colours in the picture aren’t quite right but I think it gives you an idea. The fabric is quite a soft pink with only small amounts of mottling unlike the picture in the silkweaver site.

The other thread choices I am thinking of are Needlepaints 2011 which is shown with the caribbean eve as a floss toss or VC blackberry or passionfruit, these both have similar colours but the blackberry is a bit darker with a more blue tone to it. The other thing I haev eben considering is that the person it is for has a burgundy / wine thing going in thier room so the lighter colours may not fit. It is for my father girlfriend.. though calling someone who is 60 his girlfriend seems somewhat odd :p

So please be harsh, be honest I htink I have an idea of which way I want to jump but need some other opinions and you guys always have plenty of good advice especially about thread and fabrics.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a big fan of blue on pink. I think it clashes a bit, and for the effect you’re going for, might not turn out the way you want. Though I do hate that it means you’ll have to start over. :(

Personally, I like PassionFruit the best, followed by the Needlepaints 2011. I think the 2011 might be too dark, though that will be hard to tell until I get my eyes on the oak box you are planning to use. :P The BlackBerry has similar colour clashing issues, I think. But the PassionFruit is a strong red colour that offsets the fabric nicely, and will go well with the colours of the oak box, I think.

This is, of course, just one person’s opinion. :P

I like the blue on pink; I think the fiber works with the fabric. But…I don’t think it would match the frame or the person. If she likes burgundy and her home has a lot of burgundy, then switching colors might be a good idea.

Hey there! Wow… what a lovely piece of strawberry milkshake! The piece I used was much darker and I ended up using white and silver as nothing else would toss on it. (http://stitchinplace.net/gallery/Completed-Projects/2004051103_G)

With a dark oak box, I’d go with the burgundy… it brings out the pink in the fabric. It’s a double score since she has a pink and burgundy theme going on in her room!

I’m so sorry to call out the frog patrol, though. :(

I think I’d go for either the Needlepaints 2011 or the Passionfruit, particularly if you are using a dark oak box :)

Oh, and to get back to your sleepy dingoes and Dreamworld post, go check out my latest blog entry when you get a chance. My DH managed to get a pic of Tikki sleeping the other night - kind of freaky huh?

    :)

If the box is dark and the fabric is reasonably pale, I’d go for a darker thread. I like the Passion Fruit - it’ll coordinate with the fabric but not blend in. The Needlepaints looks very dark to me with not enough variation, but the Blackberry would work if you prefer that one :) Sorry to suggest frogging!

As I’ve had a little time this morning, I’ve made an image of the different floss choices and put them on the actual box that the project will be finished in.

Most of the images are directly from this blog post, but the top left image is actually a composite of the actual website images of the pieces in question. It seems mostly accurate except for the colour of PassionFruit. It’s way off on the website compared to what Vicky has posted, and from what I’ve seen in person. So not an accurate presentation in that regard.

Otherwise, I still stand by my choice of PassionFruit, with 2011 still lagging just close behind. :P

I was just checking out your blog and noticed you had received floss for HAED. Can you tell what to do to receive floss this way. Many thanks.

Hi Anne I am lucky enough to have a wonderful friend that acts as a floss fairy for me. He goes to all the trouble of bundling the floos up in those gorgeous little packets before sending it out to me.
So unfortunately there is nowhere to “purchase” floss for HAED projects like that.

Anne, you can contact lisa at haed and she will kit up any HAED for you which is a great deal if you are a none USa person as the floss is so much cheaper there is a link on the website

Vicky i emailled you but i am with the very wise and sage Adam i think Passionfruit aswell, it is such a luscious colour and it will glow on the strawberry milkshake and set off the oak tones nicely as adams wonderful pictures showed.!

Yup, I pretty much agree with Adam too, I’d go the PassionFruit as well. Or anything with deep, warm red tones would work well with the oak box and the fabby colour. Bummer if you have to frog, but at least it’s only a little bit and the finished box will so worth it in the end. Can’t wait to see a pic of it all completed! :)

Yep, Adam is wise :) Passionfruit, with needlepaints in second place. I am impressed though, that you are stitching an E and not a W ;)

Adam, great work with those box pics

Wise and sage? You crazies. You make me sound like some sort of Shaolin monk. :P
